FLEX is not outside air temperature

Outside air temperature describes actual conditions. FLEX temperature is a calculated assumed value entered in the takeoff performance page. The aircraft interprets the higher assumed temperature as a reason to use reduced thrust.

A valid FLEX temperature must remain compatible with actual temperature and the aircraft system logic. The calculator therefore removes FLEX and displays TOGA when its estimate falls below the usable threshold.

Why use reduced takeoff thrust?

When runway and climb margins permit, reduced thrust can lower engine stress and operating wear. The allowed reduction is limited by aircraft weight, runway availability, obstacles, surface condition, atmospheric conditions and system configuration.

This simulator calculator models a subset of those relationships. It does not model certified obstacle clearance or an airline performance database.

Conditions that reduce FLEX margin

Anything that makes takeoff more demanding tends to lower the estimated FLEX value. Penalties can accumulate, so several moderate factors may remove FLEX even if none looks decisive by itself.

  • Higher takeoff weight
  • Shorter effective runway or intersection departure
  • High elevation or temperature
  • Tailwind and uphill slope
  • Wet or contaminated runway
  • Engine or wing anti-ice
  • Air-conditioning packs left on

FLEX versus TOGA

FLEX commands reduced thrust based on the calculated assumed temperature. TOGA commands full rated takeoff thrust. A TOGA indication from this tool means reduced thrust is unavailable in its simplified model; it does not guarantee runway feasibility.

Always investigate warnings and verify inputs rather than inventing a FLEX value. Changes to runway, takeoff shift, flap configuration or weight require a new calculation.

Using FLEX in MSFS or X-Plane

Enter FLEX only when the selected aircraft add-on implements the Airbus workflow. Compare the output with the add-on documentation and ensure the units and aircraft variant match. Simulator implementations can differ, so small discrepancies between tools are normal.
